I spent many afternoons in my abuela’s kitchen, surrounded by the comforting scents of freshly made tortillas, and simmering stews. But beyond the clinking of pots and the sound of the stove crackling, my abuela had a way of weaving life lessons into the rhythm of everyday life. While we worked side by side, her hands deftly chopping vegetables or prepping masa, she often shared stories, most of them rooted in Costa Rican folklore. One that has stayed with me all these years is the legend of La Cegua.

A legend steeped in mystery and warning, a cautionary tale for anyone who dares to wander after dark.

According to legend, La Cegua would appear as a beautiful naked young woman with long dark hair in distress, looking for help from unsuspecting travelers – usually men. Her beauty is captivating, but there’s something unnervingly eerie about her, something that doesn’t quite feel right. The man, eager to impress, offers to help her, and they walk together for some time. As they walk, the woman’s appearance slowly begins to change. Once the man shows his true intentions and tries to take advantage of her—she would reveal her true, terrifying form: a monstrous creature with a hideous horse skull for a face with glowing demon red eyes, driving her victim to madness and blindness. The man is paralyzed by terror, but it’s too late. La Cegua’s punishment is swift: she drives him mad with fear, leaving him to wander aimlessly, blind and cursed.

La Cegua is more than just a vengeful spirit, but a guardian figure, defending the dignity and honor of women who might otherwise be preyed upon by men who seek to take advantage of them. In a society where machismo and patriarchal attitudes have historically held sway, La Cegua’s story serves as a powerful symbol of female empowerment.

My abuela imparted a simple but profound lesson every time she told this story, just as we followed the careful steps in the kitchen—measuring, stirring, tasting—so too must we follow the path of kindness and humility in life. No one—not even the most powerful—can escape the repercussions of their actions, especially when they dishonor or harm others. For women, La Cegua represents a guardian—one who ensures that they are not silenced or diminished in a world that tries to overlook or oppress them.

So, next time you find yourself at a crossroads of decision, remember La Cegua: treat others well, keep a humble heart, and respect those around you. Or risk meeting the wrath of a vengeful spirit... and losing sight of what really matters.
